Description of primary duties and responsibilities:
Primary Purpose of the
Fayetteville State University’s Office of Access & Student Success encourages and assists families in
the Sandhills Region of North Carolina, who are traditionally under-represented in post-secondary education with preparation for, entry into
and completion of a post-secondary degree.
The TRIO Student Support Services-STEM
Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education for the purpose of providing structured academic support activities to low-income and
first-generation college students. The goal of SSS–STEM is to increase the college
retention and graduation rates of its participants majoring in science, technology, engineering, math (STEM),
including Health Science. The services provided create opportunities for academic development, assist students with basic college
requirements, and motivate students toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education.
Description of Work
Primary Purpose of the Position:
The primary purpose of the STEM
Academic Advisor/Coach position is to support low-income and first-generation students at Fayetteville State University with structured
academic support such as coaching, advisement and instruction to improve successful course completion, retention, graduation and
participants pursuit of a STEM career.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Support Services – Implement educational interventions to low-income/first-generation students enrolled at FSU to
increase retention and graduation rates; provide coaching sessions with students one-on-one and in a small group to support student success
with course completion and persistence. Serve as freshman seminar instructor for students enrolled in the TRIO
freshman seminar course; provide advisement on course selection and utilization of university/community resources; develop and conduct
non-cognitive development workshops (i.e., study skills, test-taking skills, note-taking skills, critical thinking, student success
software, STEM course success, etc.).
30%-Student Needs Assessment/Record Management – Identify, recruit
and retain participants; complete comprehensive individual needs assessments and develop individual academic plans; review grades and
transcripts; maintain files on participants; track services using Blumen database and university student success software; monitor
satisfactory academic progress; administer pre and post-tests; conduct Early Warning alerts; submit monthly reports/quarterly reports.
20%-High Impact Practices – Provide support designed to increase graduation rates of low-income/first generation students in STEM fields by assisting with FAFSA completion and financial literacy workshops; and workforce
development; assisting with the development of ePortfolios; providing STEM career awareness workshops; providing
connections to stem related internships; and supporting graduate school attendance through advisement and taking students on graduate school
10%-University Collaboration – Attend STEM faculty meetings and student orientation sessions to
inform of project goals, objectives, services, and eligibility requirements in order to assist in the identification of eligible students.
Communicate with faculty members on the academic progress of students; make referrals to other student services, identify faculty and staff
to assist with tutoring and conduct academic workshops. Attend departmental meetings. Serve on university, regional, state and national
committees. Make referrals for on campus and off campus resources to support program participants
Minimum Education and
A Master’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
A Master’s degree or
is required or equivalent combination of education and experience. Prefer a degree in science, engineering, business, math, education,
public administration, social science, or related field from an accredited college/university;
Minimum of 1-2 years of experience
with federal TRIO/GEAR UP programs, academic support programs, or similar programs
serving students traditionally underrepresented in higher education.
Minimum of 1 year of experience advising/counseling/coaching in
academic planning, career planning and student access/success.
Knowledge skills and abilities:
Experience in case
management, such as documenting and tracking services in a database and/or participant file.
Ability to follow directions to
implement evidence-based program; excellent organizational skills meet deadlines; effective interpersonal and oral communication skills; and
an interest in working with high school students.
Applicants must have the temperament for engage with college level students with a
focus on the student experience.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Candidate should have experience in overcoming barriers similar to SSS–STEM participants.
Degree in science, engineering, business, math, education, public administration, social
science, or related field from an accredited college/university
