Position Information

DICKINSON STATE UNIVERSITY (DSU) is a regional comprehensive institution within the North Dakota University System, whose primary role is to contribute to intellectual, social, economic, and cultural development, especially to Southwestern North Dakota. DSU is looking to hire a Professional Advisor/Career Services Specialist. The Professional Advisor portion assists with advising, early alert, retention, at-risk student meetings, and serves as a liaison between SOAR Center personnel, faculty, staff and students. The Career Services Specialist portion is responsible for the long-term planning, program development, service delivery, and assessment for Career Services.

The areas and programs that comprise the Student Opportunity and Resource (SOAR) Center provide resources and services to assist students in pursuing their academic goals at Dickinson State University, in and out of the classroom. SOAR Center offices work collaboratively to enhance the mission of DSU through servant-centered leadership and providing high-quality and accessible programs promoting excellence in learning and supporting scholarly activities. SOAR Center includes academic and advising resources, career development, disability services and tutoring services.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree
  • Education background
  • Experience in Higher Education
  • Experience with Handshake
  • Experience with Blackboard CMS
  • Proficiencies using Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience using PeopleSoft
  • Ability to maintain confidential files and documentation
  • Ability to communicate and facilitate conversation with a diverse population
  • Ability to use and maintain a variety of assistive devices, equipment and software

COMPENSATION PACKAGE:

  • Wage beginning at $16.75/hour, commensurate with qualifications and experience
  • Temporary, no fringe benefits included

MAIN OFFICE/WORKING LOCATION: Dickinson, ND

STARTING DATE: As soon as possible

GENERAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide advising support for incoming and returning students as part of the Advising Center.
    • Academic areas include, but are not limited to: Agriculture and Technical Studies; Fine & Performing Arts; Health, Physical Education& Recreation; Language & Literature, Math & Computer Science; Natural Sciences; Nursing; School of Entrepreneurship & Business; Social Sciences; Teacher Education and University Studies.
  • Create, implement and update (each semester) advising folders for students.
  • Assist with course registration each semester.
  • Assist with advising during New Student Registration (NSRs).
  • Remain point-of-contact for students once transitioned to discipline-specific academic advisor.
  • Assist Advising Center personnel with various student outreach, retention and communication initiatives.
  • Develop positive relationships with university students, faculty and staff to demonstrate good will.
  • Assist in coordination and promotion of university sponsored events.
  • Serve on university committees, as requested/assigned.
  • Attend team meetings
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to develop knowledge and strengthen skills in professional field.
  • Answer phone and return calls promptly
  • Provide career exploration, skill building, and high-quality professional development services to the university’s undergraduate students.
  • Expand employer outreach by cultivating and fostering relationships with community members/groups to foster good will toward the university.
  • Research best practices and implement effective tools used in career assessment.
  • Serves as career advisor for innovative career counseling.
  • Ensure that DSU students are best positioned to compete for positions in today’s competitive and complex marketplace.
  • Provide educational opportunities for resume and/or vitae development.
  • Provide educational opportunities for the development of comprehensive interviewing skills, including but not limited to: phone, face-to-face and meal type scenarios.
  • Assist students with the use of various self-assessment tools and resources.
  • Provide information of graduate schools and application processes.
  • Coordinate graduate school fair and DSU Career Day.
  • Conduct salient skill building workshop and utilize resources on campus as relevant (i.e. Human Resources, Student Involvement Leadership Development, Sodexo, etc.).
  • Collaborate with campus partners to provide career exploration opportunities.
  • Develop and implement semester long schedule for career related learning opportunities.
  • Meet as needed with department chairs, faculty and necessary staff to ensure the professional needs of students are being met.
  • Meet as needed with representatives of the DSU Heritage Foundation to ensure the development of relationships between students, alumni and key partners.
  • Identify opportunities to align campus efforts with key alumni partners to further career opportunities for students.
  • Market Career Development services through the use of website, social media, brochures, posters, radio, television, presentations, workshops, etc. on and/or off campus.
  • Present to faculty, staff, administrators and students.
  • Present to (potential) collaborative partners.
  • Provide educational outreach through classroom presentations, workshops, seminars, etc. on career assessment, career exploration, decision making, job readiness skills, resume/cover letter development, interview skills and job location strategies.
  • Collect and provide current information to students, graduates and alumni regarding potential job opportunities.
  • Maintain the employment opportunities located within the Office of Career Services.
  • Assist with special initiatives as assigned/needed.
  • Assist in coordination and promotion of university sponsored events.
  • Serve on university committees, as requested/assigned.
  • Supervise SOAR Center student employees.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to develop knowledge and strengthen skills in professional field.
  • Answer phone and return calls promptly.
  • Work nights and weekends, as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

POSITION DETAILS:
