The English Department is the largest department in the Division of Art & Humanities in the College of Letters and Science, with 60 permanent faculty and 10 staff, a large cohort of undergraduate majors, and a distinguished graduate program. The Graduate Advisor is responsible for oversight and coordination of all aspects of the Ph.D. program in English and the concurrent degree in Medieval Studies. This includes, among other relevant duties, student advising, advising faculty and other department members on relevant policies, close management of program budgets, and coordination of graduate appointments.
- Acts as a department resource on relevant departmental and university policies and procedures; reviews students’ progress and advises students and faculty on requirements for degree/program completion; identifies students with progress issues and recommends interventions; participates in curriculum planning in collaboration with chair and faculty.
- Directly advises prospective and continuing graduate students on relevant department and campus requirements and policies.
- Administers language exams and QEs.
- Oversees matters relating to student conduct: responsible for interpreting campus policies and advising students and faculty on student conduct, student grievances, disputes, and issues regarding discrimination.
Graduate Program Funding and Appointments:
- Oversees graduate program budgets, including departmentally-held funds, campus-awarded fellowships and block grants.
- Maintains projection and tracking worksheets; processes student fellowships, grants, scholarships, and other awards; oversees processes for equitable and appropriate assignment of GSIs and Readers; coordinates GSI and Reader assignments each term.
- Advises students on financial aid options on campus and extramural fellowship opportunities.
Recruitment and Admissions:
- Plans and implements outreach programs with specifically targeted institutions;
- Advises prospective applicants on necessary academic preparation and appropriateness of program as it pertains to the prospective applicant’s goals; evaluates domestic and international transcripts for degree eligibility;
- Initiates and arranges student recruitment visits to Berkeley; delivers programming to prospective students.
- Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
- Knowledge of or ability to learn University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of or ability to learn University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.

Salary & Benefits
Annual salary will be commensurate with experience within the range of $51,700 – $74,700.
