POSITION SUMMARY: A First Year Advisor is a professional staff member who works with undergraduate students to help them
succeed academically, socially, and functionally at EMU. On a regular basis, First Year Advisors help students transition to college and
understand the difficulties of balancing all of the demands required in order to persist and graduate with a degree. Advisors provide
individualized and group-level support to students throughout their college life, primarily focused on the first year of enrollment. The
priority of this role is to equip students through proactive academic advising and connect students with campus resources toward resilience
and success at EMU.


  • Master’s degree preferred in
    counseling, psychology, education, or related field. (Bachelor’s degree accepted with commensurate experience)


  • Intercultural competence, understanding of the student development process and evidenced practice of
    healthy professional boundaries.
  • Skills in interpersonal and group communication; 3-5 years experience working with high school or
    college students preferred.
  • Commitment to and support of the mission, vision, and policies of Eastern Mennonite University.

Special skills:

  • A. Advise incoming students, potentially including transfer students.
  • B.
    Satisfactory performance is achieved when:
  • C. Support student academic and personal success through attention to Early Grades,
    Navigate alert resolution and referrals to CARE Team.
  • D. Provide information and up-to-date requirements of the functional aspects
    of a college
  • experience for all first year students.
  • E. Teach courses or lead workshops/activities related to first-year
    transitions, academic success,
  • or career planning
  • F. Collaborate with campus resources to support students at EMU toward
    mental, emotional and social wellbeing.


  • A. Report to the Assistant Provost for Student
    Success for consultation and evaluation.
  • B. Participate in project oversight with First Year Advising QEP Committee.
  • C.
    Participate in bi-monthly meetings to collaborate with other Advisors and supervisor.
  • D. Participate in meetings with academic
    schools and departments to maintain communication
  • regarding courses and resources.
  • E. Participate in selected training and
    professional development opportunities that align with a
  • First Year Advisor role. (Mandatory reporting, mental health training,
    Title IX, etc.)
  • F. Participate in campus activities according to time and interest.
