Liberal Studies is looking for a
talented Assistant Director of Advising and Diversity to join the team. This individual will advise students in Liberal Studies on academic
programs, providing practical information related to the curriculum and degree progress, as well as administrative aspects of course
selection and registration. This includes advisement for students in Global Liberal Studies and Liberal Studies, where students transition
onto 8 undergraduate schools at NYU (representing 90 majors) as well as internal transfer options. Help students make informed decisions
about their academic and professional goals. Interpret institutional policies and procedures for Liberal Studies, NYU, and relevant
programming areas; and recommend or approve special exceptions when necessary. Facilitate access to university resources and support
services through appropriate referrals. Each Assistant Director in Liberal Studies has a portfolio that consists of five components: (1)
assigned caseloads for advisement from the general student population based on alphabetical distribution, (2) additional advisement and
support for a special student population, (3) assigned programming areas which will be developed on behalf of students and colleagues, (4)
service on relevant internal or external committees, and (5) liaison responsibilities with appointed schools or programs at NYU. The
Assistant Director for Advising & Diversity supports programming, services and outreach for diverse student populations in Liberal Studies,
such as international students, students of color, and first generation students (each of which represents 15-20% of our student body, a
significant percentage). This position coordinates mentorship initiatives for these populations, and facilitates networked opportunities. In
addition, the role coordinates placement, enrollment, support and tracking for ESL courses hosted through Liberal Studies for international
students; and further provides decision support to Global Services on academic requests (eg. reduced courseloads, OPT/CPT work
authorizations, etc). The Assistant Director liaises with relevant departments at NYU, such as Global Services, Center for Student Life,
Center for Multicultural Education & Programs (CMEP), Academic Achievement Program (AAP), and the LS Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Working
Group; and serves on relevant University and School committees, such as the First Generation Working
Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Counseling, or other appropriate
4 years’ relevant experience in student advising or an equivalent combination of
education and experience.
Experience advising undergraduate students in liberal arts,
including experience with international students, students of color and first generation students.
Required Skills, Knowledge
Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to advise and provide solutions to
problems. Knowledge of standard office software (Google Apps, Microsoft, etc.).
Preferred Skills, Knowledge and
Knowledge of best practices and theories in student development and mentorship, as well as program assessment methods
