Job Summary

Promote the TRIO ETS College Bound program (a federally-funded grant program) to eligible students (low-income & prospective first-generation college students); advise program participants and their families on post-secondary education and career opportunities; and conduct workshops and program activities in-person and virtually, and serve as a chaperone on campus visits and field trips.

Advisor will serve ETS target schools, primarily West Lake JHS and Granger HS.

Some evening and weekend activities will be required. A requirement of this position is to travel to multiple sites and work with minimal supervision.

Please note: This is a temporary position that has guaranteed funding through August 31, 2021.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Promote the TRIO/ETS program in coordination with SLCC departments, target school personnel, and community organizations in order to identify eligible students and select program participants.
  • Assess participants’ needs for services.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with participants, families, and target school personnel.
  • Provide outreach, academic, personal, and career information and advisement; assist students in developing educational plans, career goals, study skills, and life skills.
  • Develop and present presentations on college admission and financial aid application information, and assistance for program participants and their families.
  • Plan and implement campus visits and field trips.
  • Administer and interpret diagnostic tests and inventories, such as Career Cluster Interest Survey, ONET, etc.
  • Provide outreach and reentry services to secondary and postsecondary dropouts.
  • Assist with reports, data collection, program evaluation.
  • Develop new activities and services to recruit and meet project needs.
  • Maintain student files and documentation of eligibility and services, as well as document participants’ academic progress.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.
  • Master’s degree with emphasis in education, community engagement, or social work (completed or in progress).
  • Knowledge of college policies and procedures in the Granite School District and the Salt Lake School District.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with emphasis in Behavioral or Social Science, Education, Psychology, Communication, or other related field.
  • Trade off 2:1 experience/education requirement.
  • Related professional experience of zero (0) to two (2) years.
  • Reliable transportation and valid driver’s license is required to travel to multiple schools and program activity sites.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Understand the needs of students from economically and educationally under resourced communities;
  • College resources, programs, degree options, and application procedures (application, registration, catalog, schedule, etc.);
  • Financial Aid scholarship and scholarship application process and resources;
  • Utah high school graduation and Utah Regent’s scholarship requirements;
  • Effective forms of advising for students and their families;
  • Needs assessment (with individuals, communities, schools, families, etc.);
  • Career exploration, values clarification, and goal setting;
  • Working collaboratively with a variety of school administrations, college and community personnel;
  • Excellent communication with diverse populations and across cultures;
  • Maintain multiple projects and timelines, as well as work a flexible schedule which may include occasional evenings and weekends;
  • Computer operation, data systems, social media knowledge and skills (Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, Banner, StudentAccess, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube preferred), and presentation media including laptops and LCD projectors;
  • Work independently at different sites and manage multiple projects;
  • Documentation of confidential and sensitive information; and the
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively within diverse teams, including people of all abilities, races and ethnicities, religions, countries of origin, gender and gender identities, sexual orientations, and socioeconomic backgrounds, in order to maintain positive working relationships across the College and with community partners.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, and ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
  • Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.

Special Instructions

Salt Lake Community College will complete a criminal background check on the finalist.

Finalist will be expected to pass background checks from the Granite School District and Salt Lake City Schools District.

This position will require a flexible schedule.
