Description of Work Unit

The Department of Geosciences is one of five academic departments within the Warner College of Natural Resources. The mission of the Department is to provide high-quality education to geoscience students at the undergraduate and graduate level, to train professionals for the broad spectrum of geoscience and geo-resource careers, to carry out, catalyze and support scholarly research in applied and theoretical realms of geosciences and its many allied fields, and to provide geoscience-associated and broader service to the university, the State of Colorado, the nation, and the international community.

Position Summary

The Academic Success Coordinator advises undergraduate students across the Geosciences Geology major and minor cohort and coordinates with the department staff and faculty on the efficient and effective scheduling and support of the curriculum and student success. Advising includes coursework, faculty mentor interactions, student recognition, scholarship, and award opportunities, providing outreach and intervention to students of concern, monitoring data and patterns of success and difficulty, and referring students to outside campus resources and opportunities where appropriate. The position is integrated into WCNR and CSU-wide Academic Success Coordinator networks. The position is central to providing excellence in advising and supporting students in our undergraduate programs.

Required Job Qualifications

  • A B.S. or B.A. degree, or higher, and two or more years of professional experience in higher education working with students, or similar experience.
  • Proven ability to facilitate multiple projects in a highly organized manner, effectively utilizing office computer and other resources with attention to detail.
  • Ability/experience relevant to advising/mentoring undergraduates on course and degree requirements and connecting with relevant university resources.
  • Ability to engage collaboratively, constructively and enthusiastically with faculty, staff and students
  • Ability to contribute to improved efficiency and effectiveness in student success

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • An MS degree in student affairs, personnel administration, counseling, or related areas, or three or more years of relevant experience in advising and academic department operations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • A degree and/or significant experience working in association with a Natural Resources, Geosciences, or other Science-related discipline.
  • Experience assisting with the management of undergraduate programs including curriculum, advising, and course selection.
  • Demonstrated creativity, leadership, and the skills needed to engage successfully with department and CSU colleagues, and with diverse student groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to serve in a broad variety of adaptive department support roles as needed.
  • Proficiency with CSU advising and other administrative tools.

Duty/Responsibility

  • Advise freshman and/or transfer Geosciences undergraduate major and minor students from incoming through completion of their program. Meet with and advise prospective incoming students and parents.
  • Advise and assist students through broader issues, including transitions and major/minor exploration, financial support opportunities, connections with other CSU resources, and engagement with faculty mentors as appropriate.
  • Assist with student recruitment, course overrides, substitutions, transfer credits and other basic clerical and related advising needs, interacting with department head and faculty mentors as appropriate.
  • Understand and respond to issues confronting diverse and under-represented students, including ethnically diverse, international, military veteran, non-traditional, parents, disabled, and other cohorts.
  • Help students to develop more effective and sophisticated decision-making skills.

Duty/Responsibility

  • Assist with department student recruitment.
  • Assist with department reporting, review, and assessment activities.
  • Monitor enrollment and achievement data to identify and recommend improvements regarding patterns of success/difficulty
  • Make recommendations on the scheduling of department courses in the interest of efficient student program completion.
  • Contribute to pre-graduation out-briefings and post-graduation tracking of alumni.
  • Participate in the Academic Support Coordinator networks at WCNR and CSU, including the sharing of best practices.
  • Support related general department office and operations-related duties as determined by the Department Head.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed department student records.
  • Participate in student recognition activities/events.

Percentage Of Time: 30

This position is 75% FTE. Salary range at 75% equates to $37,500 – $41,250. Full time equivalent is $50,000-$55,000.
