Academic Counselor/Instructor – Veterans Upward Bound

Job Title: ACADEMIC COUNSELOR/INSTRUCTOR

Department: VETERANS UPWARD BOUND

Reports to: DIRECTOR OF VETERANS UPWARD BOUND


SUMMARY

To identify and select
eligible veterans in the target area; to serve the veteran participant by providing vocational/educational counseling, and other
academic-related services; to promote an increase in post-secondary admission rates and reentry rates, and to encourage veterans to re-enter
the mainstream of education and earn a certificate or degree.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
include
the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Educate through personal contact and group meetings the faculty and administrators
    of the target area post-secondary schools regarding the project’s goals.
  2. Establish a working relationship with service
    agencies of the target area through personal contact and group meetings.
  3. Identify and select eligible participants for the
    project’s services.
  4. Teach/tutor participants in one or more of the following areas: English, Math, Science, Reading,
    Computers, and/or Foreign Language.
  5. Counsel project participants regarding educational and career goals and provide admissions,
    financial aid, and institutional information to better equip the participant in making a decision in selecting a post-secondary program of
    study that will best meet individual needs.
  6. Encourage enrollment in GED programs and post-secondary entry and reentry through
    motivational, career, and academic counseling.
  7. Disseminate financial aid information and assist participants in securing adequate
    financial aid.
  8. Assist participants in gaining admission to, re-admission to, and the completion of post-secondary education.
  9. Encourage retention using motivational techniques.
  10. Document participant activities and interactions in participant files and
    required reports.
  11. Conduct follow-up of all participants.
  12. Any other assigned duties and responsibilities as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty
satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations
may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Classroom teaching experience preferred, as well as
at least two years experience providing counseling and/or academic advisement. Experience in working with disadvantage, racially and
culturally diverse people; Case Management skills which include documentation of services in participant files and required reports and
resource identification; Knowledge of postsecondary educational systems. Knowledge of GI Bill programs and application procedures; Ability
to relate to veterans, community persons, representatives of veterans service agencies, and programs and the staff of the university; Belief
in the value of higher education and the ability to pass that belief on to others.


EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred in education, counseling, or a closely related field.
Prior TRIO experience is preferred. Veterans preferred. Teaching experience desirable in one or more of the following areas: English, Math,
Science, Reading, Computer, and/or Foreign Language.


OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Must be able to relate
to participants, teachers, counselors, and administrators in a positive manner. Must demonstrate a high degree of professionalism and adhere
to professional ethics. Must be computer literate and able to work with word processing programs; must possess case management skills such
as resource identification and documentation of services.

SALARY RANGE:
$28,000 – $30,000
